Block Island and Connecticut

After leaving Martha’s Vineyard, our first stop was back to Block Island. We encountered a thunderstorm on the way and were fortunate that the main impact on us was some moderate rain. We are always happy to get a freshwater rinse for the deck, and we stayed nice and dry in the cockpit.

When we arrived in the Great Salt Pond, a very protected mooring field at Block Island, it was clear they hadn’t been quite as fortunate. The mooring field and adjacent anchorage got hit with a 50+ knot gust of wind in the storm. This wind resulted in multiple boats dragging on anchor and endangering other boats. More damage came when a ferry tried to leave the area too quickly and threw a massive wake. This resulted in a dock collapse! The harbor master was still quite busy addressing the aftermath when we arrived. We had a quiet night there, nonetheless.

Our second night was in a beautiful, quiet anchorage off Fishers Island. Fishers Island is just off the coast of Connecticut, but is technically part of New York. The island is home to one of the top links-style golf courses in the world, in addition to very fancy houses. We used our paddle board to go to a thin sliver of beach, and Anne got in a bit more dinghy practice.

Next stop is New London, Connecticut. Anne will fly home from there to work at the hospital. Jim will use his time in a marina there to work on those never ending boat projects….
