Heading North

After a great week exploring Fernandina Beach and tackling boat projects, our sailing friends joined us and we headed north.

Bobby & Katie are friends we met in 2016 in our very first sailing class. We shared a 31’ monohull — sleeping on it and taking it out for class for three days. As luck would have it, we’ve become fast friends. We’ve been so fortunate to sail with them multiple times, and now our trips include their daughter, Addy. This trip was extra special: Addy turned 10 while we were underway!

We had a great few days with them, making our way north to Island of Hope Marina, located in the outskirts of Savannah. Some highlights:

  • A turtle conservation center visit on Jekyll Island. We got to learn all about sea turtles and see firsthand the ones they are nursing back to health (often after injuries from boat collisions) to release back to the wild.
  • Jekyll Island historical mansions. In the early 1900s, it was an exclusive club for families like the Rockefellers and the Goodyears.
  • Dolphins and more dolphins! We had the closest visits yet, so close at our anchorage we could hear their squeaks and breathing.
  • Steak birthday dinner in the cockpit at anchor. It was finally warm enough to be comfortable and breezy enough to keep away the no-see-ums.
  • Delicious seafood boil dinner at a local restaurant.

We explored Savannah today (a first for both of us). Our friends will depart tomorrow and other friends will join us. On Saturday, we will again continue our journey north.
