Learning About the ICW

After leaving our rainy anchorage on Sunday the 10th, our next stop was a marina in Morehead City, NC. We spent 5 nights there while Anne attended her Georgetown Coaching course. Starlink has been providing good internet even while we are underway, but the class ran for eight hours each day, making it easier to be stationary. Jim took advantage of the time and location for boat projects. While that list will never be finished, it’s very rewarding to cross items off the list.

Morehead City was a nice little town — some of the fun of this lifestyle is exploring places we’d otherwise never get to. We had delicious local food and drink, and the town had all the stores we needed for getting supplied.

We’ve continued on along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from Morehead City. We have seen many dolphins and don’t think that will ever get old! Not too much traffic, as we are off season. That’s made it easy to find a place to stay each night. Our nights have been a combination of anchorages and marinas. Both have their advantages, for sure. Our new solar arch has been performing well, getting our batteries completely full by about lunch time. Because Tilia also has a pair of big water tanks, we can operate without a marina for days at a time.

The ICW itself is very interesting. It’s sometimes called “The Ditch” because portions of it are very narrow. When planning for this trip, the amount of available information is immense and somewhat overwhelming. When actually traveling, it’s been very manageable, requiring only attention to the details as we go. We’ve already navigated several bridges which have to be opened for us to pass. Each bridge has its own rules on when it will open or not.

So far, we have mostly been on the developed portions of the ICW. The banks often have marinas, restaurants, and houses (some grand, some modest). Tonight, though, we are in a secluded anchorage just off the ICW. All we can see are trees, water and birds.
